Youth Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament to take place Sat, April 14th
Take your fishing skills to the next level and show us what you’ve got! On Saturday, April 14th we will be hosting our first youth kayak bass fishing tournament on Phelps Lake in Rockwall. Phelps like has a Kayak Launch and we’re going to make good use of it to see what we can pull out of the lake. I have personally seen a 9lb+ Female Largeouth bass caught in this lake and odds are there are more. The general process for a kayak fishing tournament is similar to that of using a boat with some minor adjustments. As kayaks don’t have live wells and we don’t want you hanging a stringer of your boat, we’re going to make use of some new technology in the form of the iAngler App. iAngler was developed by Michael Christopher out of Irving, Texas. He was a software programmer with IBM who after retirement started an App design business. He took an rfp to help with marine life research and soon found his App had applications in the tournament fishing world. iAngler allows a kayak fisherman to catch a fish, take a picture following the guidelines, and then submit the caught fish through the app to the tournament director. The tournament director can then review the photo and approve it. You keep your best 5 fish, and the winner is determined by total length of fish caught, rather than by weight.
This style of fishing is growing across the U.S. and we want to get the youth of Rockwall involved in this valuable sport. We will follow all Texas Parks & Wildlife statutes as well as some of the guidelines from professional kayak bass fishing leagues. If your young boy or girl is interested in participating, or you’re interested in volunteering please shoot me an email at [email protected]
